About the workshop

This CPD accredited workshop is delivered online (by Zoom) in two x three-hour sessions that aim to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to communicate more effectively in healthcare settings. In particular, it aims to enhance the ability to use appropriate language to have the impact intended during clinical interactions.

This course will provide reflective and experiential learning opportunities to support the learner during challenging and complex communication scenarios such as discussing bad news and shared decision-making. It will also assist participants to recognise and respond appropriately to the emotions felt by others. This workshop is of particular relevance to medical practitioners from other than English speaking backgrounds.

Our Tutors

Our highly esteemed educators bring extensive experience in language teaching and research, with over two decades of expertise in IELTS and OET, with advanced qualifications in writing, education, and linguistics; as well as achivements and recognition for a PhD thesis on expert communication in General Practice.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes will enable participants to:

  • Implement the principles that underly the disclosure of bad news to patients and family members in the local medical context;
  • Apply a simple framework for breaking bad news and engaging in difficult conversations with patients and family members;
  • Use language and other skills such as silence, gaze, gesture and body language to offer empathic responses that resonate accurately with the patient's emotions and feelings; and
  • Bring the patient’s ideas, concerns and expectations into the interaction to achieve a patient-centered approach to the consultation.

This workshop has a pre-reading module ’Communication in Healthcare’ which will be made available prior to the workshop. It also has a predisposing activity completed at the start of the workshop and a reinforcing activity completed at the end of the workshop.
